The Journey of Her Life
With a radiant smile that could brighten the darkest room and a peal of infectious laughter that lingered in the hearts of those around her, Jacquelyn Shannon Hayslett-Smith, fondly known as Jackie, adorned life with warmth and kindness. She embodied unwavering family values and epitomized the essence of maternal love as a remarkable mother to her children, a nurturing grandmother, a steadfast sister, a cherished aunt, a beloved cousin, and a loyal friend to many.
Jackie's faith was the cornerstone of her existence, a beacon of light that guided her every step. From a tender age, she embraced her devotion to Christ, and her untiring commitment to His teachings was evident until her final days. She found solace and community in the embrace of the Progress Union Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, AL, while holding dear the memories of her church family from St. Louis under the late Bishop Samuel Austin Layne Jr.
Educated within the nurturing walls of the Catholic school system and later the St. Louis Public School District, Jackie embarked on a journey of learning and growth. Though her aspiration to become a nurse was cherished, life's course led her to pursue academic excellence in business administration. She earned her associate degree from St. Louis Community College. Jackie furthered her education, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Athen State University, all while gracefully balancing the roles of motherhood and employment.
Jackie was a dedicated provider throughout her life, tirelessly supporting her family. From her early days at Busch Stadium, Kiel Center, and the Dome at America Center to her groundbreaking role as the first person of color in an office position at Norwood Country Club, Jackie blazed trails of excellence. Her tenure with the Federal Government spanned decades, a testament to her steadfast work ethic and commitment.
Jackie's vivacious spirit and generosity endeared her to everyone who knew her. She reveled in the joy of giving, particularly during her favorite holiday, Christmas, ensuring no one felt forgotten. Her zest for life extended to her love of travel, always eagerly planning her next adventure.
In matters of the heart, Jackie's journey included two marriages. Her union with Terry Hayslett Sr. blessed her with three cherished children, Nicholas (Nikki/Nick), Terry Jr. (TJ), and Shannon. Later, she found companionship and love again in Earl Smith, sharing two decades of partnership before dissolving.
Jackie leaves a legacy of love and resilience as the sun sets on her earthly journey. She is reunited in eternal peace with her beloved parents, James and Essie B. Shannon, and siblings Ruby, Delores, Darlene, Johnny, Donald, John (James), James Harold, Leroy, and Steven. Jackie's memory will forever be cherished by her adoring children, Nikki, TJ, and Shannon; her beloved grandchildren Rajiah, Terry'Onna, Heaven, Terrell, Maliyah, Terron, Taylor, Ayden, and Sage; her great-granddaughter Ti'Hari; her dear sister Beverly (Joe Evelyn), brothers Charles and Samuel, brother-in-law Olatunde, son-in-law Chris, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives she touched with her enduring love and light.
As we bid farewell to Jackie, let us cherish the memories of her laughter, love, and indomitable spirit, knowing that she will forever remain a beacon of hope and inspiration in our hearts. Though she may be gone, her legacy of love will endure for generations to come. Rest in eternal peace, dear Jackie. Your spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know you.
